Gasquet and Monfils' all-French battle gets 2011 tournament underway
Talented Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Gael Monfils will get the 2011The Boodles underway when they play the first match of the tournament on Centre Court at Stoke Park on Tuesday.
Gasquet and Monfils are contemporaries and both enjoyed outstanding junior careers before evolving into two of the most eye-catching tennis players on the men’s tour. Gasquet recently recorded his best ever result at Roland Garros by reaching the quarter-finals of his home grand slam and is also a former Wimbledon semi-finalist. Monfils has been a semi-finalist at Roland Garros and is renowned for his exuberant athleticism on court and, like Gasquet, has been ranked inside the world’s Top Ten. Monfils is also The Boodles defending champion and should enjoy a return to Stoke Park as he completes his Wimbledon preparations.
The Championships get underway at Wimbledon on Monday so little wonder that so many of the biggest names from the ATP men’s World Tour have chosen The Boodles as the ideal place to hone their grass-court games. Next on court after Gasquet and Monfils on Tuesday will be multiple Grand Slam semi-finalist Tommy Haas and experienced Spaniard Tommy Robredo, who will play a one-off match before another first round tournament match before David Nalbandian and Viktor Troicki rounds off what promises to be a thrilling day of competition at Stoke Park.
