Going for Golding at The Boodles
18-year-old Brit Oliver Golding was the toast of The Boodles on Friday when he took the notable scalp of World No.14 Juan Monaco with a 6-3, 6-4 win.
“It’s definitely a nice boost before Wimbledon and it’s my first Wimbledon so everything like that helps. It’s great to have a chance to play here against Juan,” said Golding, who has been taking his first steps on the pro circuit since winning the US Open junior title last summer. Golding has been given a wildcard into Wimbledon next week, where he will play Russia’s Igor Andreev.
Despite the loss to Golding, Monaco seemed to enjoy his visit to Stoke Park and he and Golding delivered an entertaining match which frequently had the crowd in raptures. Monaco came to The Boodles looking to hone his grass-court game ahead of Wimbledon, where he has been drawn against Leonardo Mayer.
Earlier in the day, big-serving American John Isner beat The Boodles favourite Fernando Verdasco to notch up a confidence-boosting 7-6(2), 6-2, 10-5 win of his own ahead of his scheduled first round match at Wimbledon against Alejandro Falla. Verdasco said he had enjoyed his time at The Boodles. “I'm feeling great playing this event,” said Verdasco. “It's near london, it is quiet here and I'm really enjoying it. I hope to come back here for many years to come.”
Last week’s Queen’s champion Marin Cilic kept up his impressive grass-court form when he beat Spain’s Nicolas Almagro 4-6, 6-3, 12-10, courtesy of a match tiebreaker. Cilic has been picked by some as a dark horse to win his first grand slam title at Wimbledon and will open his campaign at SW19 against Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany.
Saturday’s final day matches will see Cilic take on Monaco, Almagro up against talented young Dutchman Robin Haase and an all-Spanish clash between Guillermo Garcia-Lopez and Albert Ramos.
